Acupuncture for fertility and IVF support

Whether you've just started trying to conceive, have been trying for some time, or are navigating IVF and assisted reproductive treatments, the fertility journey can be both exciting and, at times, deeply challenging. For many people, fertility concerns can bring feelings of uncertainty, frustration, grief, and stress. While every journey is unique, having the right support can make a meaningful difference.

My approach to fertility combines both Western and Chinese medicine perspectives. I take the time to understand your health from multiple angles, reviewing investigations such as blood tests, semen analysis, and basal body temperature (BBT) charts, alongside your menstrual cycle history and symptoms. From a Chinese medicine perspective, I also assess your overall health, including digestion, sleep, energy levels, stress, emotional wellbeing, pulse, and tongue. This allows me to develop a personalised treatment plan that supports not only reproductive health, but your health as a whole. I have completed further training under Kirsten Wolfe's 'Fertile Life Method', to better equip me with the skills and knowledge to help you start your family.

Treatment may include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, dietary and lifestyle recommendations, and targeted supplementation where appropriate. The goal is to create the most supportive environment possible for conception while helping you feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout your fertility journey.

How Chinese Medicine supports fertility

Improve blood flow to the reproductive organs to supports healthy ovaries, uterus, and overall reproductive function

Support efficient ovulation to aid a healthy corpus luteum development and robust progesterone levels.

Reduce stress and activate the “rest and digest” nervous system to promote relaxation and optimal body function for conception

Enhance overall nourishment to provide the body with the nutrients and energy needed to support ovarian health and fertility

Promote an efficient menstrual bleed which shows healthy uterine lining development.

Regulate the Hypothalamic pituitary ovarian axis (HPO) to balance reproductive hormones that control ovulation and fertility

Chinese Medicine View on fertility

In Chinese medicine, fertility is viewed as a reflection of overall health and balance within the body. Rather than focusing solely on the reproductive organs, Chinese medicine considers the health of the entire system and how different organs and channels work together to support conception.

The Kidneys are considered the foundation of fertility, providing the body's reproductive energy and connecting closely with the uterus. The Liver helps ensure the smooth flow of Qi and stores Blood, which is essential for a healthy menstrual cycle. The Spleen and Stomach produce the Qi and Blood needed to nourish the body, while the Heart supports circulation and emotional wellbeing.

Two important acupuncture channels, the Chong Mai (Sea of Blood) and Ren Mai (Sea of Yin), originate in the uterus and play a central role in regulating menstruation, fertility, pregnancy, and fetal development.

The ideal treatment plan

Ideally, I recommend beginning treatment around three months before trying to conceive, particularly if you have recently come off hormonal contraception, have irregular cycles, or have known fertility concerns. This preconception phase gives us time to support your overall health, optimise your menstrual cycle, and address any underlying factors that may be impacting fertility.
From a biological perspective, it takes approximately three months for an egg to mature before ovulation. This means the choices you make today, including nutrition, lifestyle, supplementation, and treatment, can influence egg quality in the months ahead.

That said, acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be beneficial at any stage of your fertility journey. Whether you're just starting to think about conception, have been trying for some time, or are currently undergoing IVF or other assisted reproductive treatments, treatment can be tailored to support your individual needs and goals.

A note on Sperm

Male factors contribute to around half of all infertility cases, yet sperm health is often overlooked. In recent decades, sperm counts have dropped dramatically.
Research shows a 52% decline in sperm concentration and a 59% decline in total sperm count between 1973 and 2011 in men from North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand (Levine et al. 2017). Updated findings show the decline is now happening nearly twice as fast as before the year 2000 (Levine et al. 2023).
When trying for a baby, both partners contribute equally to the chances of conception, so it makes sense to check sperm health when planning a pregnancy or if conceiving has been difficult.
Sperm quality doesn’t just affect your chances of conceiving—it also influences the health of the pregnancy, the wellbeing of your child throughout their life, and even the health of future generations. The genetic material you pass on has lasting effects.
It’s really, really important for your partner to do a sperm test.
If sperm results come back normal, that's great news and one less factor we need to be concerned about. However, if there are areas that could be improved, identifying them gives us the opportunity to take targeted steps to support sperm health.
Sperm production takes approximately three months from start to finish, meaning any changes made through diet, lifestyle, supplementation, or Chinese herbal medicine will generally take at least three months to be reflected in semen analysis results. For this reason, when male fertility factors are present, it's important to think of treatment as a medium-term investment in improving reproductive health and optimising the chances of conception.
