Personalised Chinese herbal medicine treatments designed to support your health, restore balance, and help you feel your best

What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine is an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, using natural substances to support health and restore balance within the body. Herbs may include various parts of plants such as roots, flowers, bark, peels, and seeds, as well as some minerals and, more rarely, animal-derived substances. Each herb has unique properties and functions within the body.

Chinese herbal medicine can be used as a stand-alone treatment and is the primary treatment used during tele-health consultations, or it may be prescribed alongside acupuncture and other therapies as part of a holistic treatment approach.

How are herbs prescribed?

After a detailed consultation, including tongue and pulse assessment, I determine your Chinese medicine pattern diagnosis. From there, I prescribe a herbal formula tailored to your individual presentation and health goals.

In Chinese herbal medicine, herbs are rarely used in isolation. Instead, they are combined into formulas, traditionally designed to work synergistically within the body. I often use classical formulas that have been used for hundreds or thousands of years as a foundation, then modify them by adding or removing herbs to better suit your specific needs.

Herbs are generally prescribed in one of two forms:

  • Herbal pills are convenient, tasteless, and generally more affordable. They are easy to take and work well for many conditions, though they are slightly less flexible in terms of modification and may act more gradually.

  • Herbal Granules resemble instant tea or coffee and are mixed with hot water to create a herbal tea. While they do have a stronger taste that some people may not enjoy, they are often more quickly effective and can be customised more precisely to your presentation. Granules are generally more expensive than pills due to this increased flexibility and individualisation.

  • Before your appointment, you’ll receive an online intake and consent form to complete. On the day, please arrive well hydrated, having eaten recently, and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid brushing or scraping your tongue beforehand, as tongue assessment forms part of the diagnosis.

  • During your consultation, we’ll discuss your health concerns and goals before assessing your pulse, tongue, and any relevant areas of the body. Your treatment may include acupuncture, and where appropriate, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, herbal medicine, or lifestyle support.

  • You’ll then rest comfortably with the needles in place for around 20–30 minutes in a calm and relaxing treatment environment. After treatment, people often feel more relaxed, settled, and balanced.
