Cupping Wollongong

Personalised cupping treatments designed to support your health, restore balance, and help you feel your best

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a traditional therapy that uses gentle suction on the muscles and soft tissues to help relieve pain and tension, improve circulation, and support recovery. It may also be used during the early stages of colds and flus to help support the body and encourage circulation to the surface.

I use both traditional fire cupping and modern plastic suction cups depending on your presentation and comfort. Fire cupping involves briefly heating the inside of a glass cup to create suction before placing it on the body (don’t worry, no flames come near your skin!). Plastic cups create suction through a small hand pump and provide a gentler alternative where needed.

From a modern perspective, cupping may help release tight fascia and muscle tension, improve local blood flow, and stimulate the body’s natural healing response through gentle micro-stimulation of the tissues.

It’s particularly good for neck pain, shoulder pain, and upper and lower back pain.

Are cupping marks bruises?

Not exactly. While cupping can sometimes leave temporary marks on the skin, they are not considered bruises in the traditional sense. Some people mark easily, while others may not mark at all, depending on factors such as circulation, muscle tension, and the area being treated.

In Chinese medicine, darker purple marks are thought to indicate poorer circulation or longer-standing β€œblood stagnation,” while lighter red or pink marks generally suggest healthier circulation and less stagnation in the tissues.

These marks are usually painless and commonly fade within 2–7 days..

Your first appointment

acupuncture for nervous system regulation Two women having a conversation at a reception desk, one is sitting on a chair with short curly hair, the other is standing, smiling, and working on a laptop, with a ocean-themed mural in the background.
  • Before your appointment, you’ll receive an online intake and consent form to complete. On the day, please arrive well hydrated, having eaten recently, and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid brushing or scraping your tongue beforehand, as tongue assessment forms part of the diagnosis.

  • During your consultation, we’ll discuss your health concerns and goals before assessing your pulse, tongue, and any relevant areas of the body. Your treatment may include acupuncture, and where appropriate, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, herbal medicine, or lifestyle support.

  • You’ll then rest comfortably with the needles in place for around 20–30 minutes in a calm and relaxing treatment environment. After treatment, people often feel more relaxed, settled, and balanced.
